About Us

Our Mission & Vision

At Theatre 202, we create social justice theatre with, by, and for young changemakers in our nation’s capital.
Our vision is to provide underserved youth with an aspirational experience of co-creating theatre in a brave, artistically excellent, and community-centered environment.

Our Story

Theatre 202 was founded in 2022 by DC public school teacher Caity Schneeman and her former students. It grew out of more than a decade of school-based theatre programming and a clear need for sustained, high-quality creative opportunities for DC youth beyond the classroom.

Many of our founding youth leaders began as students in Caity’s classroom at KIPP DC. Years later, they returned to mentor younger artists and help build Theatre 202 from the ground up. Together, we became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to offering free, paid theatre programming year-round.

What We Do

We believe theatre is more than performance—it’s a pathway to confidence, employment, mentorship, and community. Our core programs include:

  • Touring Youth Musical
Created and performed by Cardozo High School students, these youth-friendly, social justice-focused productions travel to Title I schools and community centers across DC. Students earn community service hours while sharing important stories with their peers.

  • Community Musical Production
Each spring, youth ages 14–24 from across the city come together to stage a large-scale musical. Every participant receives a stipend for their time and talent, ensuring that finances are never a barrier to participation.

  • Summer Youth Employment Program
In partnership with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP), we provide six weeks of musical theatre training and job readiness for 50+ youth each summer.

Our Impact

Our participants—many of whom face barriers to opportunity in school or employment—gain performance skills, job experience, mentorship, and confidence.

By offering a safe, affirming space to explore justice, identity, and community through performance, Theatre 202 helps young people find their voice, tell their stories, and build strong futures.
